Balboa is developing a vision of contemporary furniture in which design and fabrication are conceived as a single process.
Founded by Clarence Arod, the studio explores how materials and their transformation give rise to form.
At the heart of the practice is a search for necessity. Through drawing, prototyping and making, each line, proportion and assembly is tested against other possibilities. The process moves between analysis and instinct until a form feels inevitable — when nothing seems arbitrary and every element has found its place.
This pursuit is not about simplicity for its own sake. Planes, masses and voids come together to form an architecture in which structure, material and function are inseparable. Industrial techniques and hands-on experimentation are both part of this approach.
The studio seeks to create objects with an immediate and enduring presence — pieces that seem to belong to several eras at once.
